We have therefore decided to follow those who use the term "assertive casework"<4) when referring to methods which embrace less permissive techniques such as control and advice when used selectively in the interests of the client. In discussing authority the word "control" is often used and the reader will have noted that it is included in the title of this chapter. Control and authority are both related to power. Used as a noun, a "control" means a regulator which possesses power to direct, command, restrain or influence conduct and actions.

Which she may associate with other authority figures such as teachers, clergy, etc. ; (c) a vaguely perceived association with parental figures; (d) his knowledge and skill in helping her with fostering problems ; (e) fantasies about both his role (giving and taking away babies) and his (magical) powers. The clients of psychiatric social workers, probation officers, medical social workers and so on, will similarly perceive these various aspects of authority in the worker though it is probably true that one or other aspect will predominate at different stages of the relationship and will also vary with the personality and maturity of the client.

This can be reassuring to a client and encourage him to bring still further material in the knowledge that the worker will respond in this, to him, quite new way. C.
