In the 1870s William Gilbert participated in manoeuvres in Scotland with the Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders, a sort of military reserve of which he was an officer, having been active for the best part of 20 years. A prolific composer and arranger, many of his works remain in the repertoire while attending the Royal College of Music, he studied with Herbert Howells, Humphrey Searle and John Lambert. From 1985-98 he was also Music Director of the Dyfed Choir, one of the leading mixed voice choirs of the country.

There are lots of famous operas, and the best ones have some of the greatest music ever written. Incredibly talented, he taught himself to play the violin, banjo, guitar and mandolin.
